Falafel make a delicious and really easy meal- I first tried them when I was looking to shed a few pounds, and I'd heard that they were a filling but healthy option.

My vegetarian neighbor also loves them, so whenever I make some, I always make sure to leave a batch for her.

Making homemade falafel

The hardest part to making falafel is getting all the ingredients, the rest is pretty easy.

Like any type of food, the recipe varies depending on who you ask, but this one that I use and I think it works really well.

These are the things you'll need to add to your shopping list:

  • A can of chickpeas
  • 3 tablespoons of tahini
  • 1 large egg
  • 1 tablespoons of ground coriander
  • 0.5 tablespoons of chili powder
  • A pinch of grated lemon zest
  • 1.5 tablespoons of ground cumin
  • 1 clove of garlic
  • 2 tablespoons of chopped parsley
  • 0.5 tablespoons of baking powder
  • 1  tablespoons of lemon juice
  • 0.25 tablespoons of salt
  • 0.25 cups of all-purpose flour
  • 2 tablespoons of chopped onion
  • Olive oil


Crispy falafel recipe

Make sure to rinse the chickpeas first, and then you simply drop all the ingredients into a blender.You then take the resulting mixture, and make little patties out of it (some people like to add pine seeds at this point, I'm not so keen though).

Lay them out in a pan that's been doused in olive oil (also make sure the patties don't touch- otherwise they'll stick together!).

You simply cook them on either side till they start turning brown and then all that's left to do is enjoy!

I like making a yogurt, cucumber and mint dip to go with them- but that's entirely up to you!

Falafel, originally one of the most popular snacks available in Arab East, Israel and Great Syria, is usually made up of spiced fava beans and/or chickpeas. In recent years, it has become very popular in Westernized culture also due to immigration and globalization. It is indeed a great combination when you have it with pita sandwiches.

To make a dish of crispy yummy falafel at the pace of your own home, all you need to have is:
  • 2 tbsp of flour,
  • 15 ounce dried garbanzo beans,
  • 1 tsp baking soda,
  • 2 tsp coriander powder,
  • 2 tsp cumin powder,
  • 4 chopped onion,
  • 4 garlic cloves,
  • 1 bunch parsley,
  • 2 green chili,
  • 1 tsp lemon juice.

Now soak the beans overnight, and the very next day, drain them well.

Now add beans, parsley, onion, and garlic cloves together with baking soda, coriander powder, cumin powder, flour, and chili in the food processor and blend them well. Now make few patty cakes with the pulp.

Heat oil in a frying pan. Now fry those patty cakes till they get brown colour. Serve them in a serving dish along with plain salad. Put some lemon juice onto it to make it more delicious. Serve it hot.
