When my mom did it the butter would come in a wax paper wrapper that had the measurements printed right on the paper and all she did was cut through the paper and the butter to get the amount needed. Then you pick it up using the paper around the butter holding the edge of the wrapper and let it unwrap and fall into the mixing bowl when doing a recipe..and then you just throw away the piece of wrapper.
