I think it tastes like vomit personally. And nothing like Mango as the above poster mentions.

I've had good papaya and bad papaya. I'm eating one right now. It's delicious.

Bad tastes like funky, sweaty feet (cheesy and corn chip like-GROSS). The skin is typically very soft and mushy, instead of semi-soft and firm-but not hard.

Good papaya is one that is just starting to yellow. Smells like a cantalope and taste somewhat in between a melon, mango, and cucumber. It's not extremely sweet but it has the moderate sweetness and taste of butterscotch, at least that's how this one tastes- like butterscotch lol. Hope this helps

I have a funny story about Papaya.  I was in Cuba with my wife in January eating breakfast.  She suddenly threw a piece of fruit back onto her plate proclaiming that it tasted of poo.  Two months later I was in Cancun with friends eating breakfast when one of my friends did exactly the same crying out 'that fruit tastes of shit!'  On both occassions it was Papaya.  A fruit unfamiliar to us Brits.  For the remainder of our holiday in Cancun we were mixing Papaya with tequilla naming it 'Shit Fruit Cocktail' and drinking it as a dare.  It tasted rank!  :D

The taste of papaya is wonderful. It is a wonderful recipe for breakfast table. Papaya, while cooked, is soft, juicy and mild sweet in taste. When it is ripened, it resembles mango taste somehow and can be eaten raw using spoon. If you take ripe papaya with some lemon juice over on it, you find it simply irresistible. It is a popular dish in Hawaii, which is considered for the land of best papaya. This type of ripe papaya also goes wonderfully well with prosciutto ham. It is said that if you use few pieces of papaya while cooking mutton, it helps in boiling mutton faster. Because of its aromatic taste, it is useful in soup, stew, salad etc.
