The owner of the largest food chain (in terms of the number of restaurants operated) is a company called Doctor's Associates. The company owns Subway, which has over 33,000 restaurants around the world.

Doctor's Associates: The owner's of Subway Doctors Associates, Inc. (or DAI) was founded in 1965.

The co-founders of the company are Fred DeLuca and Peter Buck, who opened their first restaurant in Bridgeport, Connecticut with an initial amount of $1000 in funding. (The name of the company derives from the fact that Peter Buck holds a Ph.D. Qualification.)
Almost all the Subway outlets operate as franchises, and the company's menu is well known for it's submarine-style sandwiches.

The world's largest food chains The fast food industry represents roughly $142 billion dollars in annual sales in the US alone. Globally, the industry is seriously big business. A number of well-known chains have contributed to the massive growth seen by the industry in the past few decades, and the top 10 (as of Jan 2012) are as follows:
  1. Subway- 33749 restaurants
  2. McDonalds- 32737 restaurants
  3. Starbucks- 16858 restaurants
  4. KFC- 16200 restaurants
  5. Pizza Hut- 13100 restaurants
  6. Burger King- 12200 restaurants
  7. Dunkin' Donuts- 8800 restaurants
  8. Dominoes Pizza- 8533 restaurants
  9. Wendy's- 6650 restaurants
  10. Taco Bell- 6450 restaurants

Top of the food chain Whilst Subway is currently the fast-food chain with the most outlets, its closest rival McDonalds still pips it to top spot in terms of revenue.

It is also worth noting that Subway is the largest 'single-brand' fast food chain. If you include conglomerate operations, Yum! Brands (which owns fast food chains Taco Bell, KFC, Pizza Hut and WingStreet) would be considered larger.

Chain stores are also called retail chains. They are a group of retail outlets that share a common brand and a centralised management system. These chains usually have standardized business methods and supervising practices.

A restaurant chain, similarly, is a set of restaurants, usually under the same name in many different locations. These restaurants may lie under either a shared corporate ownership or in a franchising agreement. Generally, the restaurants that are part of a chain are constructed to a standard format and offer standard menus. Fast food restaurants are the most common in the food chain business.

The 10 largest companies among the top 400 chains are McDonald's Corporation, Yum! Brands, Diageo PLC, Wendy's International, Darden Restaurants, Allied Domecq Quick Service Restaurants, Brinker International, CKE Restaurants, Outback Steakhouse and AFC Enterprises. These tyrants combined to a sum of $107.5 billion. The owners/operators of McDonald's Corporation are Reggie and Tracy Jones.
