I can't show you a picture of a steak fish head here, so I guess I need to describe it for you instead. This type of fish is silvery, with creepy, slimy-looking long "whiskers" that hang out from below the fish's head. The fish has typical, glassy, fish eyes that are devoid of any expression. If the fish is still alive, water may move through gills near the head as the fish swims and generally hangs out in the river or stream, doing its thing. However, if the fish has been caught and killed (after all, some people throw them back after catching them), the head may be displayed on a plate, as this type of fish is commonly used to prepare fish dinners.

  • Steak fish facts

Usually, a steak fish is also called a White Hake. This type of fish has a heavier texture and weight than most fish types, so it's ideal for fish "steaks" - hence the name, Steak Fish. Of course, in countries such as America, it's not that common to serve fish with their heads still on - this is a primarily Asian custom that is popular in Japan, China and Korea. In the USA, people don't necessarily want to stare at the fish head while they're eating, whereas, in Asia, they love seeing the fish head, as they know it proves the freshness of the fish, since it's not all rotten or whatever.

  • Preparation

Steak fish may be served alone or with side dishes, such as rice, potatoes, or vegetables. Steak fish is a savory food, so it goes well with spices, such as pepper, salt, and tarragon. There is really no limit to how a chef or cook can prepare steak fish - for example, it may be pan-fried, deep-fried, or baked in the oven. Steak fish, with or without the head, is a popular choice in countries where it is fished or farmed.
