Although this question sounds rather straightforward, the answer is actually a bit more complicated. There are a number of companies competing for the title of 'world's largest restaurant chain'.

The world's largest restaurant chain

  • If you are looking for the biggest restaurant chain in terms of sales, revenue, and profit - then McDonald's is the largest restaurant chain (estimated annual sales reach $32.4 billion).
  • If you're talking about the chain with the most outlets, then the winner is Subway, with over 37000 in over 100 countries.
  • The largest restaurant-related company is Yum! Brands, the company which owns Taco Bell, KFC, Pizza Hut and Wing Street.

The restaurant chain which is most prolific within the world is McDonalds. The American company founded by two brothers. Some people may question their classification as a 'restaurant' since they are in effect a fast food chain.

However, food can be consumed on the premises and as such they can be classified as a restaurant and they define the brand as a restaurant or 'drive thru' restaurant.

The format for the restaurants is almost the same, although some concessions are made to cultural differences etc in different parts of the world.

McDonals now have 30,000 restaurants operating all over the world and this figure grows almost daily. In any 24 hour period, McDonalds serves approximately 50 million people in over 119 countries.

McDonalds now even operates within the Middle East, the Arab Emirates, Dubai and Oman etc. They are even a common sight in former Soviet Union countries e.g. Russia, Bulgaria etc.

The McDonalds phenomenon has grown at a meteoric rate, considering that McDonalds only came into being in 1954.
