Blue skin is one of the symptoms of alcohol poisoning, caused by excessive amounts of alcohol. As well as drinking too much, you can also contract alcohol poisoning through drinks that contain methyl alcohol which includes antifreeze, rubbing alcohol and varnish to name a few. Your skin may turn blue as a result of this; other symptoms may include vomiting, disorientation, seizures and a plummet in body temperature.

There are a number of treatments that can be adopted to help recover from alcohol poisoning. If you feel that you or a friend is suffering from such an illness then you should get to a hospital immediately. However, you can do something before you reach the hospital which is to ensure that you drink plenty of water. Alcohol poisoning causes dehydration and water will help to flush out the alcohol in your system through urinating. In some cases you may have to get your stomach pumped, which will need to be done at a hospital immediately to prevent the alcohol from seeping into your bloodstream. This procedure consists of a tube being inserted into your mouth or nose travelling directly to your stomach, which then empties your stomach by saline.

If your breathing has slowed down considerably then hyperbaric oxygen therapy may need to be used. In this instance you will administered concentrated oxygen in a pressurised chamber for up to two hours. This will help to increase the supply of oxygen to your brain, cells and tissues which will in turn restore your breathing to normal. If it has reached the point where the alcohol has entered the bloodstream then a kidney dialysis may be advised, especially if you have ingested methyl alcohol. The dialysis sessions will take up to four hours at a time, in which a needle is inserted into your blood vessel. The machine you are hooked up to will filter out the waste products from your blood as they are soaked up by the dialysis fluid and return the blood to your body.
