Hi there,

The production of Melanin can affect your face profoundly by causing discolouration, darkness and taking away the natural glow.  The amount of Melanin on your face is due to your individual skin type and affects your overall complexion.

You can reduce the melanin on your face by doing the following:

  • Avoid spending excessive amount of time in the sun. We all need to have some exposure to the sun for our overall wellbeing, however too much sun exposure can increase melanin and also cause other skin problems.

  • Apply a good sun screen lotion appropriate for your skin. You can ask most beauty therapists to advise you on the most suitable sun screen for your face.

  • Maintain a good face cleansing regime. Try to use a day and night cream to keep in moisture on the face and exfoliate once or twice a week to help remove dead skin cells. This will make your face appear brighter.

What foods or fruits should you eat to reduce melanin?

  • Vitamin A can help to reduce dead skin cells produced by melanin and treat hyper pigmentation. You can get Vitamin A from foods from green or yellow vegetables, such as spinach, beans, carrots, broccoli and apricots.
  • Milk, butter, cheese and eggs are all good forms of Vitamin A.

  • Vitamin C foods can help to decrease Melanin on the face and protect it from forming more Melanin.  Vitamin C rich fruits and foods that you could eat are oranges, lemons, strawberries, grapefruit and blackcurrants. Other Vitamin C enriched foods are broccoli, tomatoes, cabbage, potatoes and watercress.

I hope this helps to answer your question :)
