I really love food "mashups" - the culinary equivalent of taking two completely unrelated tracks and making great music.
The Cronut (a cross between a croissant and a donut) is a great example of a food mashup that's really taken off.
Apparently the demand for the scarce treat is so great that they sell for $40 fresh from the bakers, and 8 times more if you buy them from Craigslist (there are only 200 made each day by a specific NYC baker).
Anyway, back to burgers, and I recently watched a documentary about Japanese Ramen noodles, and that's when I first fell in love with the "Ramen Burger".
The recipes vary from site to site, but the idea is that rather than having the burger patty sandwiched into a bun, it sits in between layers of fried ramen noodles.
The noodles have to be cooked in such a way that they remain crispy enough to hold the juicy meat - harder than it sounds!
As far as where I'd go to enjoy one, the restaurant featured in the documentary I mentioned sounds like a lovely place to visit. You can check out the clip here:
I guess the only hitch with this particular plan is that the cost of flights to Japan might be a small deterrent.
So, seeing that I'm based in the UK, a more reasonable idea would be to pay a visit to local sushi chain (and my former employer) Yo! Sushi.
They're always coming out with quirky dishes, and their latest "Yo burger" is kind of like a ramen burger, but using rice instead of noodles.
Oh yeah, and it comes served on a flying tray:
