Drop one just like the one you want to buy on the floor in the grocery store and then check it out ! After you're done apologizing for your mistake, you buy the watermelon like the one on the ground. If it's ripe. If not, then say Sorry, and look at something else. Works for me ! LOL

I'm a melon thumper. I can pretty well judge when any melon is ripe just by thumping them with finger.

If a watermelon sounds hollow, it's ripe. A honeydew is the same. A cantaloupe is dead ripe when you can hear the seeds and some liquid when you shake it. If it sounds like a baby rattle, it's overripe and dry inside. I was a produce buyer for about a year, for one of the grocery chains in my area.

Well Duke, you know that I'm ripe. My heads as hollow as a drum.

You slap it like like a booty. If you can feel the good watermelon vibrations traveling through your hand. It's a ripe watermelon. If it feels like slapping a slab of cement, then get yourself another watermelon.

I always demand customer service and ask the produce clerk to slice it in half and re-wrap it for me. Only once, I was denied ( didn't buy it )
