I've noticed a trend that coffee producers are switching and making a darker roasted coffee. Does anyone know why?

"Roast level is largely a personal preference, as each level produces
different qualities in the coffee. Knowing whether you prefer light,
medium or dark roasts, though, can help you identify new coffees that
you might like."

From Rooster's link.

Greek to me! All coffee tastes terrible, even with cream, sugar and other additives.

I did not see one word about the most important "quality" in coffee, caffeine. The level of caffeine is the only " quality" I look for in coffee.

As far as I'm concerned, you have given the definitive answer. Caffeine. :)

I don't know why per se, but I do know I like a dark roast coffee, to me it has a bolder taste....which is how I like my coffee!

Not sure where you live, but in North America coffee was always roasted too dark for my taste. I am a Eastern European living in North America for 15 years now.

Dark roasts have the ability to cover bad quality beans. However, many people prefer dark roasts because they are less irritant for stomach. People with sensitive stomachs can drink darker roasts. During roasting, a substance responsible for increasing the stomach acidity, is destroyed. So the more you roast it, the less of that compound it contains.

Here is an article that covers that in detail: Dark Roast Coffee for Stomach.
