The Milky Way is the name of our galaxy. There is just one of these and hence not many others have been spotted. There a lot of other galaxies out there in the Universe numbering in the billions but there's just one Galaxy known as the Milky Way. It is well known to us because it contains the solar system. The term Milky Way comes from the Latin word "Via Lactia" which was derived from the Greek word "Galaxias" meaning "the Galaxy".

The Milky Way has between two hundred to four hundred billion stars. The Milky Way is over thirteen and a half billion years old. The Universe is also approximately the same age. Just like the earth revolves around the sun, similarly our solar system also revolves around the centre of the Milky Way. It takes around 225-220 million years for the solar system to complete each orbit.
