  • How long does it take for a bottle of wine to leave your system?
This is a difficult question to answer because everyone is different and everyone will get rid of the alcohol from their system at different rates. It is said that you should give it at least 24 hours for a whole bottle of wine to leave your system. This may be slightly longer than it actually will take but this is the safe guide and should be followed, particularly if you are planning on driving or completing any activity that requires you to be sober.

  • What factors affect how quickly alcohol leaves your system?
The main factor regarding how long it would take for alcohol to leave your system is your gender. Men's bodies process alcohol much more quickly and efficiently than women's. Men have an enzyme in their stomach that breaks down alcohol and helps to process it quickly. This is an enzyme which women do not have and is one of the factors why men can handle drinking more alcohol than women and why they will recover from it at a faster rate.

Another factor is your body size. Obviously, a person who is bigger will be able to process the alcohol much faster. Your body mass will also make a difference and if you have more fat than muscle it will take longer to process. Muscle is much more effective at processing it than fat is and this is another reason why men will be able to drink more and get it out of their system faster because they generally tend to have more muscle than women and usually have less fat.

Being fit and healthy can make a difference as can what you have eaten prior or during the time the alcohol was consumed.

A bottle of wine contains 6-7 units of alcohol, you can absorb about 1 unit per hour, so allow 8 hours for clearance.

What ever may be quantity of the alcohol used, EtG test can detect alcohol use in last 80 hours. This test does not detect alcohol but detects one of the metabolites of alcohol which can stay for longer duration in the system. This metabolite is called ethyl glucuronide. EtG test can not tell amount of alcohol consumed but can tell that alcohol was used during last 80 hours.
