There are two types of carbohydrates: Simple and complex - complex carbohydrates are better for use than simple carbohydrates; carbohydrates are broken down in the system into sugars, which are then stroed as glycogen for future energy needs or glucose for current energy needs.

The basic function of carbohydrates is to provide us with energy. Carbohydrates that are fibrous in form also help keep our intestinal tract healthy and in good working order.
