1. They are used to join cells together in cell adhesion.
2. They attach the membrane to the cytoskeleton. This is important in keeping the shape of the cell and to hold the membrane in a certain place when needed.
3. Sometimes the proteins gather together as enzymes and carry out the different steps of the metabolic reactions which take place near the cell membrane.
4. Proteins act as receptors , or sites for messenger molecules which signal the cell to start or stop metabolic activity.
5. Most importantly the proteins make the membrane selectively permeable. That is, they control the movement of substances through the membrane

Protein in cell membrane act as a gateway, channels, or pores. It separates the cell interior from its environment inside animal cells. Protein receptors are found all over the place and get signals from both the surroundings and other cells. These signals are transmitted in such manner which the cell can use to directly respond the signal. It manages the inflow and outflow stream of cell through the use of receptor and cell adhesion proteins, which also play a role in cell activities and the organization of cells within tissues. Proteins can also pair with an enzyme to take part in active transport. In this they transmit ions or particles against a concentration gradient and therefore provide the membrane an electrochemical potential gradient that the cell can use to function.

Protein does a number of jobs depending on the type of cell. The main function of protein in most cell membranes is to accomodate facilitated diffusion. This is when substances which are too big to simply diffuse through the membrane, or for any other reason can't get through (like they carry a charge) are brought through by proteins in the membrane. Other functions include things like stabilising the membrane, and helping to keep its shape.

In the cell  membrane is to  form ion channels that allow the selective entry of ions during the action potential. Most important  they  control the movement  of substances through the membrane.

The proteins are identity markers which enable cells of an organism to identify each  other, thus they attack foreign cells which lack the marker.
