Acton Trussell is four miles to the south-east of the county town of Stafford, making it an ideal place to settle for wealthy commuters. The village has a population of around 1,170 and has existed since at least Norman times, as it is mentioned in the Domesday Book of 1086. In 1985, archaeologists discovered evidence of a 4th Century Roman villa to the south of the village. How Did The Village Get Its Unusual Name?
The word 'Acton' comes from a Saxon word, ac-tun, meaning 'oak-tree farmstead'. At some point in the fourteenth century, the word 'trussell' was added, possibly to avoid confusion with similarly named villages in England. 'Trussell' was the surname of the family of the manor at the time.
