Why does everyone hate Cafeteria food? What's wrong with Pizza, submarines, Burgers or Ice cream?

It's what I would call institution fare. It's made in mass quantities with very basic ingredients. I have found it plentiful and yes they have variety. But everything has either been frozen, out of a can, from a carton, or put together by a machine and packaged. You can eat it, but you can't ENJOY it. It gets the job done its just not flavorful.

I have a better question .. What is so 'good' about it.  All of those foods you mentioned are unhealthy choices .. Loaded with high levels of nitrates, preservatives, sugar, salt,  fat .. And things we can't even prounounce.  Eaten on occasion is no big deal .. But to eat them regularly .. That is a problem.

I guess that would depend on the cafeteria .. Many cafeterias offer healthy choices like soups, salads, sandwiches (made with real meat instead of lunch meat) ... those kinds of things. It's all about choices.

Is it weird that I've never had it? Cafeterias aren't common around here and I always bring lunch from home.

Well, if you had a steady diet of that, you would get fat without doing some exercise. Pizza, burgers, etc. Are all good in moderation. Fresh fruits and veggies would be another option for people that want something different. Wouldn't it be cool if the schools had vegetable gardens that the kids / teachers would be responsible for, so they had ready access to some good food? I would support that idea, for sure.

When I was in 6th grade our 3 6th grade classes started a huge garden. Every two students got their own plot. My friend and I planted veggies, herbs and flowers. It's was a wonderful experience and we shared the products of our labor with anyone. It was amazing to see all that we grew. Our cafeteria used our veggies and the teachers had vases with flowers. The tradition continued for years.
