Why do people like spicy food? If it's mild I get it but if it's more than that how do people enjoy it? It takes away from the flavor of the dish and all you could taste is the spice

I generally like spicy food as long as there's not too much of it. But sometimes I like food that has a "kick" to it. I want some of that heat. As long as it doesn't overpower the flavor too much. Unfortunately spicy doesn't always go so well through my insides -_-
