French cuisine varies quite significantly depending on the region. Contrary to popular belief, the French don't live on a diet of frogs legs and snails!

Here are a few dishes and snacks that you're likely to come across if you visit France:
- Pâtisseries or sweet pastries. This includes the croissant, pain au chocolat, beignet and many more.
- Moules-frites or mussels and fries. This is most popular in coastal towns, for obvious reasons!
- Cassoulets or casseroles. These usually consist of slow-cooked meat (often mutton) and white haricot beans. I would recommend avoiding this dish at all costs.
- Baguettes or...well, baguettes. Fresh bread is really popular in France - it's hard to come by anything else. Bread is usually torn off in chunks and eaten with soft cheese like Camembert or Brie.
- Croque-monsieur or grilled cheese and ham sandwich. This is kind of like a ham and cheese toastie, but the bread is sweeter. For some reason, the cheese is on the outside - I never did figure out why.
