When measuring peaches, it is quite difficult to get an accurate reading. If you are going to measure by cup and not by actual weight, there is a basic rule that you can follow:

  • 1 pound of peaches = Three cups sliced
  • 1 pound of peaches = Two chopped
  • 1 pound of peaches = One-and-a-half cups pureed
  • 1 pound of peaches dried = Two-and-a-half cups
  • 1 pound of peaches dried = Five cups cooked
  • 1 pound of peaches = Two to three fresh whole

Peaches are a source of vitamins A and C and also a very good source of fiber for your daily diet.

Peaches always have to be treated gently as they are prone to bruise very easily especially when they are ripe.

If you buy your peaches under ripe a good tip is to place them in a closed paper bag make sure there is plenty of room in the bag and leave them at room temperature.  You will need to check them on a daily bases.  You can tell when the peach is ripe as you can use gently pressure on its skin and you will feel it move but not split, it will also have a strong sweet smell.

Once your peach is ripe you will need to wash it in cold running, if you prefer you can gently rub of the fuzzy skin that it has.  You will then need to store it in your refrigerator  in a plastic bag. Your ripened peach will keep for approximately three to five days this way.

When choosing which peach to buy always select the ones which have a yellow golden appearance, if it has a red tinge it doesn't always mean that it is at the ripened stage.  Never buy peaches that appear to be green or brown or certainly not wrinkled.

If you are required to peel your peach the easiest way to do this is to dip it into boiling water for approximately 20 seconds.  Remove from the water and immediately submerge into cold water.  The skin will then come off very easy.
