I have never heard of such a thing either and would recommend if that is how he wants it then he should make his own coffee but that's just my opinion.

Yes it is true that pouring boiling water straight on 'instant' coffee can impair the flavor. The coffee should be added to a little cold water first, then the hot water should be added slowly to that.

I never heard of such a thing. If you put the milk in first, the coffee granules will end up floating in the milk. I never heard of anything like that with fresh coffee either. My sister doesn't serve coffee that way, and believe me, if that were the way it should be done, she'd be doing it!

Actually it IS true that pouring boiling water straight onto 'instant' coffee will impair the flavor.
The coffee should be put into a little cold water first, then the boiling water should be added slowly to that to avoid a thermal shock to the coffee.

Read the label on any jar of instant coffee,
all of them say "do not use boiling water"
or use "hot water only". They should know!
As for coffee granules floating on the top
if you put the milk in first, for about 20 seconds
thats all! That is what I do.

It does impair the flavor of the coffee I have had a brew both ways and you can taste the difference an old women told me to try it and I did, the way I make coffee now is to add coffee, milk then put a small amount of milk in while waiting on the kettle then slowly add the water wen boiled then stir and add the rest of the milk. I suppose you could boil and let it cool down or take the kettle of before it boils so its only hot water not boiling.
