My suggestions on how to cook the perfect steak are pretty simple:
Preparation:
- Use a cut of meat that's thick enough so that you can cook the outside well enough and still leave the inside pink and juicy.
The cut you choose is going to have an impact, but just go with whatever you feel like eating really.
I've noticed the "flatiron" is becoming quite popular (even outside the US):
How to cook a tasty steak
- Take the steak out of the fridge at least half an hour before you cook it. If it's still cold in the middle when you put it in the pan, it will become tough.
- Sprinkle on some salt and black pepper.
- Rub oil onto the steak.
Cooking:
- Splash of oil in the pan, use a high heat setting.
- Turn the steak every minute for two-three minutes.
- While cooking, rub in some garlic. You can also add some butter at this point too.
- A few sprigs of your favorite herb can be dropped into the pan. Traditionally, herbs like thyme, rosemary or oregano work well.
Cooking time will depend on the size and weight of your steak, but 2-3 minutes should do it.
Here's a helpful Gordon Ramsey clip that captures the art of steak pretty well actually:
