Soybean also known as soya bean is basically a species of legume that is mostly found all over eastern Asia. It is a plant that varies a lot in terms of habit as well as height. It grows up to 20 cm (7.8 inches), to 2 meters (6.5 feet) in height. The leaflets are generally 6-15 cm (2-6 inches) long and 2-7 cm (1-3 inches) broad. The fruit is a hirsute pod that develops in clusters of 3-5, with each pod 3-8 cm (1-3 inches) long and typically comprises of 2-4 (rarely more) seeds 5-11 mm in diameter.

The word soy comes from the Japanese word shoyu.
