The basic ingredients for Philadelphia cream cheese are milk (pasteurized nonfat milk, cream (milk fat) cheese culture, salt and stabilizers Xanthan and/or Carob Bean and/or Guar Gums. Depending on the variety of cheese there may also be other ingredients added such as herbs, chives or garlic.
The cheese is suitable for vegetarians but not vegans as it is made from an animal derived product (milk). Philadelphia Original contains 100 calories and 9g of fat in a 1oz serving size as well as 105mg of sodium.
American dairyman William Lawrence in New York made the first cream cheese in 1872 and the Philadelphia brand name was adopted eight years later because the city was considered to be the home of quality food at the time. It was originally distributed in a foil wrapper but this was replaced in the 1970s with a more convenient tub as more flavors were added to the range.
It is now owned by Kraft and is sold in over 80 countries around the world.
