Mango and Papaya are two completely different fruits. In fact the only similarities that they share are the fact that they are both native to tropical locations of the world and that their shape and skin is quite similar.

First of all, the Mango has a sweet and bright flavor that is also rather fragrant with a hint of sourness. If you have tasted citrus fruit such as lemons or limes, then the Mango's sourness is not quite as bad as this. The Mango's flavor is very unique and is not unlike a peach's.

A ripe Mango can come in various colors and sizes. The color of a cultivar fruit can vary from orange, red, yellow and even green. They may also be rather hairy on the outside which makes it rather difficult to peel the skin away from the pulp. You can always tell if a Mango is ripe as it will give off a very distinctively sweet smell. The color of a ripe Mango will also be golden yellow.

Papaya is considered to be a blander compared to a Mango, although it is quite sweet in flavor, it is mild compared to the sourness of the Mango. A ripe Papaya will also be dark orange in color in contrast to the Mango's golden yellow. The texture of a Papaya is also a lot mushier or softer than a Mango's.

You will also be able to tell the difference between these two fruits by looking at their seeds. The Mango contains one large flat seed that is very difficult to cut away from the pulp inside. Whereas the Papaya will contain a bunch of tiny black seeds that can easily be scooped away. The seeds of the Papaya fruit are edible, although they have a sharp spicy taste which means that they are commonly used as a replacement for black pepper.

A mango is often smaller than a papaya, with a softer feel to it. The fruit itself is usually yellow or orange, and very fibrous. Papayas are more like cantaloupes or other melons, with a hollow center and a firm, sweet pith. Mangoes also tend to have a more acidic taste than papayas. Mangoes will usually be shaped like a large peach, although longer and slightly flattened. Papayas often have more of a pear shape, and may have a ridged surface.
