A pound cake is a simple cake that is made from four ingredients, each of them weighing a pound: Flour, butter, eggs and sugar. Therefore in total, the most basic pound cake will have a weight of four pounds, and could comfortably feed up to eight people at dessert. In some cases, the pound cake can refer to any cake with the above 1:1:1:1 ratio of ingredients. Many will choose to adapt the weights of the ingredients in the cake to make one that is bigger or smaller, whilst retaining the original ratio so the taste is similar. Read the method below to find out how to make a simple pound cake.
  • Get prepared
First things first: Preheat your oven by setting it to a temperature setting of 190 Celsius (gas mark 5). Line your cake tin with paper and apply a thin layer of butter. Beat your butter until it is creamed, and sieve your flour (along with pinches of salt and baking powder) into a separate bowl.
  • Make your mixture

Gradually add the sugar to your creamed butter. Beat this mixture thoroughly for around three minutes. Then, add the eggs one at a time, again beating them in until the ingredients are fully mixed. Finally, add your flour (beating the mixture at a slower pace at this stage) and add a splash of milk if your mixture seems very thick.

  • In the oven
Pour your mixture carefully into your cake tin, making sure it is evenly distributed. Tap the bottom of your cake tin to ensure this. Place the cake tin in the hot oven, and it should then take around one hour to cook. Test to see if it is fully cooked by inserted a fork in the center: If it comes out clean, you are ready to remove the cake and let it stand to cool.
