Port is a fortified wine, much stronger than wine, and is usually drunk in a small glass after dinner. it is called a dessert wine sometimes because of this, but can also be enjoyed without the meal of course.
It originated in Portugal hence the name, and only port
from that region should be called port.
It is aged in oak barrells to give it it's mellow nutty taste, and comes in different types, dark and light, like red and white
wine, there is dry and sweeter, tawny port.
It was, and is, a naval custom to pass the port at the officers, table only in one direction, which still persits today.
