You will be glad to know that making a cake is not difficult and it will defiantly be something you can show off to your friends and family instead of feeling slightly guilty that the cake is shop bought!. Making a cake from scratch depends on the type of cake you want to make but the fundamentals are basically the same with every cake. Firstly, find an easy recipe for the cake you wish to make. Secondly, make sure you have all the correct ingredients that the recipe states that you need. Also, make sure you have all the correct utensils. Make sure you understand all of the weights and abbreviations for ingredients such as oz for ounces or tsp for table spoon. Also, make sure you know how to grease and line the cake tin as this will save you time. Lining involves placing the grease paper so it covers the bottom and sides of the tin. Greasing involves rubbing butter or margarine onto the greasing paper which will help to ensure the cake does not stick. Be sure to check if the recipe is American or English as they both use different words to the other.
Here is an easy chocolate cake recipe for you to try, courtesy of my family recipe book:
This should make one or two small cakes.
Ingredients:
4 eggs 2 tablespoons cocoa powder dissolved in hot water 8 oz soft margarine or well softened butter
Preheat the oven to 180 degrees C. Prepare tins by greasing and lining. Put all the ingredients into a large bowl and beat well for 3/4 minutes. Half fill prepared tins with mixture and smooth out. Bake for 30/40 minutes according to size until it is well risen. Cool in the tin for five minutes.
There is a high probability that things may not go as planned because novice cake makers will either measure ingredients wrongly or over bake the cake.
Ingredients for a cake could be Eggs - 2 Milk ~ 1 cup Flour - 1.5 cups Sugar ~ 1 cup Butter - cups Chocolate, Pumpkin, Walnuts etc (This would depend on the type of cake that is being made) Pinch of salt
Preheat the oven to 220 degrees Fahrenheit. Cream the butter by battering it. Add the sugar to the creamed butter. Now add eggs one by one. Add the flour to the creamed butter, sugar and eggs. Now add the desired flavor e.g. Chocolate, Pumpkin, and Walnuts etc to the mixture. As you are adding the flavor add milk to the mixture so that it does not lose its consistency. Pour this mixture into the baking oven. Bake it for approximately 25 minutes. Now insert a toothpick in the center of the cake. If there are some dry flakes or nothing at all stuck to the toothpick then your cake is ready. If the toothpick is wet then the cake has to be baked for some more time.
Different people have their own recipes and they all taste great. I have found my grandmother's recipe the best. I bake it as it is and slice it with tea or use this recipe as a base for making other cakes like chocolate cake, cinnamon, coffee and almond. It is also very easy.
Ingredients: 2 cups plain flour 2 teaspoons baking powder 1 cup sugar 4 eggs 1 cup oil 1 tablespoon milk
Method: Process oil and sugar together to make a smooth paste. Then add eggs and beat well until smooth. Now, sift the flour and baking powder together and fold into the egg/sugar/oil mixture. Add milk. Bake for 30-40 minutes at 350oC.
To make chocolate cake: Add 1/2 cup cocoa powder to the flour before sieving it.
For coffee cake: Dissolve a teaspoon of coffee in the milk before adding it to the cake mixture.
Cinnamon: Sieve a teaspoon of cinnamon powder with flour. It tastes especially good with some honey and cinnamon tea and is very light and refreshing.
Almond: Just plonk in a handful of peeled and chopped almonds, that have been soaked in water overnight, into the batter. Decorate the top with some almond halves before baking.
Well, so much for globalization. My family secrets in your kitchen. Have fun! :)
You have to get 2 eggs, 1 cup of milk, one cup of butter, 1 1/2 of flour, 1 cup of sugar, a dash of nutmeg (my special ingredient), and something for flavoring such as chocolate or hazelnuts. Mix batter together for about 5 minutes.
Preheat oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit and cook for about 25 minutes. When done, stick a toothpick in it and if nothing is on it when you take it out, its ready. It some of the cake mix rubs off on it, then cook for 5 more minuets (or until golden-brown.) Hope I helped!! :)
The basic ingredients required to make any kind of cake are flour, butter, eggs, milk, sugar and any flavoring essence if needed. Accordingly if one wanted to bake the ubiquitous butter cake one would require the above mentioned ingredients in proper quantities and an oven. Take 2 cups of flour, about one cup milk, 2 eggs, 1 cup sugar and cup butter and one teaspoon vanilla.
First mix the sugar and butter evenly, add the egg yolks and beat them in to the mixture until an even consistency is obtained, then add the flour and milk care should be taken to blend the mixture thoroughly so as to break any lumps and obtain a rich and creamy mixture. Finally the egg whites and vanilla essence should be added all the time mixing vigorously as the more one stirs the spongier and softer the cake will be. Pour the mixture into a cake pan that has been greased with oil and place it in the oven to be baked at a temperature of 375F for about half an hour by which time the cake becomes golden yellow in texture. Take out, let it cool and then enjoy.
There are several types of cakes and their recipes are also different from each other. Her you have not mentioned which cake you want to make. Hence I am taking the liberty to give you a technique to make a cake of my choice. It is a very easy recipe and hence very easy to prepare. This recipe is to make a yellow cake.
First preheat the oven to 375 degrees. Then combine flour, baking powder and salt in mixing bowl and set aside. Then use a hand mixer and beat butter at medium speed. Add sugar and vanilla to this mixture and beat well. After that add eggs and beat them well and then add dry flour and milk and mix them thoroughly. The next step is to put the batter into cake pans and bake them for around 30 to 35 minutes. After that take the cakes and cool them for ten minutes. Then remove the cakes from the pans and cool it thoroughly. Add your favourite frosting to the cake. The cake is ready for consumption.

While you were given specific instructions which were great in making a cake, don't feel that cake making is such an ordeal. We have excellent box mixes available at all stores. These are excellent, easy to mix and bake and have many variations on the boxes. I am not putting down anyone going to the trouble to make a cake from "Scratch" but just a note that is not the only way. My favorite is Duncan Hines. Moist, light, and delicious. Happy baking!
A great site for any kind of cooking question and recipes is www.cooks.com. They have a lot of great recipes and information available. There are a very wide assortment of cakes the first blurter was correct on the basics. However there are a wide assortment of cakes, some require more advanced techniques, odd or hard to find ingredients, higher or lower temperatures etc. My best suggestion is to find a recipe. When baking anything follow the recipe exactly. If it calls for a cup of flour level the cup to make it exact, don't measure over the line for a cup of milk etc. Follow the recipe exactly! Baking is more of a chemistry experiment than it is like other types of cooking.
