A beverage (singular) is defined by dictionary.com as 'a potable liquid, especially one other than water, as tea, coffee, beer or milk.' The word beverage is a noun.

A beverage can be a hot or cold drink or an alcoholic or non-alcoholic drink, and it can be used for everything that you can drink but in some sentences may not work as well as the real or more defined name of the beverage, e.g. Lemonade, or the style of drink, e.g. A soft drink.

This word is used as a replacement for the word drink and is mainly used by shops, restaurants or bars when they say things such as, 'price includes a non alcoholic beverage' or 'we sell hot and cold beverages'. You will also probably see the word on the aisle of your supermarket where the sign may say 'alcoholic beverages' rather than separating these out into beer, wine, spirits etc.

The word beverage is used in multiple countries and the word drink in many languages translates back to beverage, rather than the word drink. This is due to the history of the word drink. To drink is the adjective for the act of drinking and the word drink as a noun has come from this adjective. It was originally not a noun for a physical drink. That word was beverage and was much more widely used in years gone by. As the noun drink has entered our vocabulary, the use of the word beverage has decreased in society and although it is the original and technically correct word to use, it has been overtaken in popularity by the word drink.

This too is starting to happen in slang for the word eat, rather than saying food, some people, say 'going to get some eats' this slang word and not commonly used or correct in the English language.
