Whenever I make bolognese, I usually just buy a standard jar of bolognese sauce and then customise it myself until I like how it tastes.
Homemade Bolognese Sauce
If I've got enough time, I'll make the sauce from scratch, using the following ingredients:
- 1 can of skinless plum tomatoes
- Tomato purée (to taste)
- Garlic purée (to taste) - I didn't know this existed until recently, but it's so much easier and cheaper than buying garlic, especially if you don't think you'll use it all!
- 1 large onion
- Tabasco sauce
- Mushrooms (as many as you like)
- 1 green pepper
- 1 beef stock cube - this thickens the sauce, adds flavor, and adds salt
- A pack of beef mince (or Quorn if you're vegetarian/want a low-fat version)
This always makes way too much for one person, so I usually wait for it to cool and then store it in plastic containers in the fridge and freezer.
I'm a bit weird in that I don't like bolognese with pasta, so I usually just eat the bolognese with some parmesan grated on top. This is completely acceptable if you're living alone, but I wouldn't recommend serving it to anybody who comes over for dinner!
