Wow. The only foods that actually contain cholesterol are animal products. That is; meat (white or dark), eggs, and dairy. Coconuts can actually aid in weight loss, as they contain lipase, a fat digesting enzyme.

Are you people serious obviously sleeping under rocks. The fact that someone still thinks coconuts are going clog your arteries, is absurd! These tasty treats are so nutritious, mirroring the same components of blood plasma! Pick up a book and know that Saturated Fat has been eaten by nearly every animal on this planet and they all seem to thrive quite well unless we get in the way of things. We are the unhealthy ones, because our small little brains think that something natural and Delicious somehow will kill us! WOW...

A young coconut is one that has been picked from the tree before it was ready to fall. They are a popular drink in Thailand. Sometimes the coconut is so young and picked too soon that the milk is not yet sweet. I have a young coconut every morning and I can honestly say it is the most refreshing drink I have ever had. :)

Regardless, coconut is one of the three 'whole/complete foods' found on planet Earth - The others being bee pollen (compressed pollen pellets from millions of flowers collected by bees, then robbed and sold), and hemp seeds. All have a harmonious balance of protein, carbs, fats, and trace elements needed for full body development.. Anyone that calls coconut unhealthy has been hit, rather than eaten one to the head. But like everything in life, do not go to the extreme with it; find that balance.

I don't get it- someone says in a young coconut there is...cripes my coconut does not have how old or young it is....I am in Florida and pick them off the ground so they are fresh but how old???  Turns out my wife has me on a bit of a diet and had me look it up in the biggest loser book she had.  It lists it as 18 calories per tablespoon which when multiplied by 16 tbsp in a cup is 288 calories- now dems a lot of calories in a cup....and I can't put a full coconut in a cup even if I jump on it!!! So based on biggest loser estimates, I am going to eat about 1/2 a cup and step on a scale tomorrow lol...

Funny, I read that the saturated fat in a coconut was metabolised differently and that daily intake of fresh young coconut/coconut water was not proven to increase LDL levels or body fat. Where do you get your information of cholesterol buildup pertaining to coconuts?

Young coconuts are considered highly nutritious. One whole coconut has only 140 calories and provides 17% of the RDA for calcium. The total fat content is 3 grams, all saturated. With a zero content of cholesterol, the young coconut has 50 mg sodium, 28 grams of carbohydrate, 2 grams of fiber,15 grams of sugar, and 2 grams of protein.

The meat of a young coconut is slimy and clear.  A young coconut contains coconut water.  This is fat free as well as cholestrol free.  A mature coconut has firm, white meat inside and is full of coconut milk which is full of cholesterol.  If you are a body builder you should stick with coconut water which also hydrates you 7 xs faster than water, but metabolizes quicker as well.  Occasionally you can find young coconuts sold at the grocery store, but many times they just call them that and they will have solid meat inside which is obviously from a mature coconut.  Best bet is to purchase a brand from Whole Foods such as Vita Coco or O.N.E to ensure you're getting the real thing :)

A fresh coconut contains an average of 134 to 283 calories depending on size. It also contains roughly 82 calories from fat and saturated fat, which can account for up to 86 % of the calorie level. Due to the high level of saturated fat within the coconut oil, it is also not recommended as being a regularly healthy option, and can contribute towards a buildup of cholesterol.

Studies are showing, however, that coconut fat or oil may actually reduce cholesterol, as long as it is not consumed in inordinately large quantities.

Studies are showing that coconut fat and oil may actually help reduce blood cholesterol levels (just don't go consuming massive quantities), due to the high level of Omega fatty acids. Doctors are recommending Omega Fatty Acids for patients with various maladies for this reason.
