I'm quite fed up with reading this rubbish. If you want to know the truth, LOOK at the label. Whilst crisps are indeed high in fat and salt when compared weight for weight, the weight of a typical bag of crisps is very little compared to the weight of most other snacks. Look at what's in one of the healthier types of crisps, typically corn type snacks; maybe quavers, french fries etc. I was recently sat at a table with a friend who was nagging me about how unhealthy crisps were because of the fat and salt. She was eating a "healthy" breakfast cereal. I look at the 2 packets and found she was eating about 7 times the salt and 4 times the fat that I was! Ok, there will be good things in the cereal too which isn't in the crisps, but as I also eat plenty of other healthy food, I will get all I need in the course of the day. If you are going to make this rediculous comparison to veg fat (which isn't saturated anyway so isn't so bad), then compare to other foods, it's meaningless without a comparison. What if you ate a bowl of fruit and nut cereal every day? As a rough comparison I've just looked at a packet of crisps (not even lower fat ones) and some fruit n nut cereal and there's 3 times more fat in the cereal, so I'd be eating 3 bottles of veg fat then if I eat that for breakfast every day!
My conclusion: Crisps, if you pick the healthier ones, are not bad for you at all, as long as you don't eat excessive amounts and you ensure you get enough nutrients from other food. Eat a packet a day and enjoy!
