The only way that you could make Malunggay chips would be to slice the pods or leaves and fry them in hot oil.

• Malunggay aka Moringa
Moringa is a perfect tree because it will grow just as happily either in the country or the city, and will provide you with food, fuel, fodder and shade. It is a soft wood so it is not suitable for building but that is probably the only criticism.

It is an easy tree to grow, and it will provide a harvest for almost all of the year, as long as it receives enough water. Cuttings can be taken from existing trees and planted quite successfully. In fact, it is not unusual for fence posts made from Moringa to take root and to grow into adult trees.

• Uses for Moringa
You can use the green Malunggay pods as a vegetable. Make sure that you pick them when they are plump and firm, but while they are still tender. Cut them into pieces about an inch long and steam them gently. Discard the pod and eat the seeds and the flesh inside. The outer skin can be composted.

Malunggay is also delicious cooked with other vegetables, lentils or beans, and with spices. The flowers and leaves can also be eaten but after you have washed them make sure they are properly dried otherwise they will taste bitter, and then cook them in their own juices.

Malunggay is a healthy foodstuff because it contains calcium, Vitamins A and C, and iron.

The leaves are also a good nutritious feed for livestock.

Use the wood for fences, trellises and for other places where support poles are needed. It can also be used as fuel, as can the discarded pods.
