Just like flour, pasta and rice the egg is one food source that always come in handy when preparing dishes at any time of the day. For this reason most of us like to keep a constant supply of them at home. Taking this into account though, once you buy some eggs and put them in the fridge at home, how long can they be kept safely before they need to be thrown out?
- The rules seem to vary a lot of this. Most people think anywhere from three to five weeks is fine. There are also people who would be quite happy eating eggs six or seven weeks after first purchasing them.
- Most eggs these days come in packaging that clearly outlines the date the eggs need to be used by. This is only a guideline though and eggs that have gone past that date by a few days should still be ok to use.
- If you ever notice a foul smell coming from the eggs or they have become slightly discolored it is properly best not to use them as they may have gone off.
- Also, if you are planning on keeping eggs for a few weeks at least, it is advisable to keep them in the fridge rather than somewhere like the kitchen cupboard. In this way, they will stay fresher for longer at a colder temperature.
