'Curry' is not an ingredient. Curry is the name of an Asian dish and nothing more. The word 'Curry' has been taken out of context and used widely , but it is not to be confused from the original meaning and origin.

There are plenty of Asian foods , there is saag which is lentils, and there is Aloo Paratha which is potatoe with a buttered Chapatti , plenty! The Curry part is all just a stereotype, its not an ingredient of every Asian food and there are plenty of other foods that don't require or use it.

As Addi says, curry isn't an ingredient, but a general term (in the Western world, at least) for a variety of different dishes that tend to include plenty of herbs and spices, and are often served with rice.

Curries (as we know them) are usually Western versions of Indian or Thai dishes.

Curry Leaves

However, sweet neem leaves — also known as curry leaves — are an ingredient. However, they're not used in curries as often as you might think!

Common Ingredients in Curry

  • Chilli
  • Cumin
  • Chickpeas
  • Garlic
  • Turmeric
  • Lemongrass
  • Ginger
  • Cloves
  • Coriander
  • Paprika
  • Cardamom pods

It's also worth remembering that Asia is a continent, and includes countries such as China, Japan, India, Thailand, Pakistan, Turkey and Russia.

It would certainly be odd if an entire continent used the same ingredient in every dish!
