Diaper cakes are a practical and cute present to give to an expecting or new mom. The only problem with them is that they may look too nice for the proud mom to take apart!
They are simple to make, and don’t require any special ingredients other than diapers - cloth or disposable - ribbons, a baby bottle and empty toilet rolls for convenience. A baby blanket is used for the trike’s handlebars, a bib for the front fender and the ‘cake’ can be decorated with teething rings and other baby toys.
You will need one or two packets of diapers - it is better to have more than needed than fewer, and any extra can always be given to the mother separately.
The steps are easy to follow;
- To create the tricycle’s three wheels, build up three layers with the diapers; one larger than the others, for the front wheel. It is here where it may make the job easier to use a toilet roll as the base.
- Once you have created three triangular-shaped wheels, wrap ribbon around the front of them, typing it into the toilet rolls.
- The handlebars are created from a baby blanket tightly wrapped around itself. Tie to the front wheel using more ribbon and bend towards the seat. Baby socks or gloves can be used to create ‘handles’ on the ends.
- Tuck the baby bottle between the front wheel and handlebars, to make it look like the front headlight.
- Use bibs for the front fender and the seat of the trike, and you’re done!
