The lychee is originally from the regions of Guangdong, Gangxi, Hainan, Fujian, Yunnan, Taiwan, Kwangtung and Fukien in Southern China. Afterwards, it has been spread in neighbouring areas of south and East Asia as well as offshore islands, India, West Indies, South Africa, France and England. The cultivation of lychee started in Hawaii in 1873, and then it came to Florida in 1883, and was carry-forwarded from Florida to California in 1897. It was introduced to Madagascar, and it is considered to be one of the largest producers. The first historical evidence of lychee was found during Tang Dynasty. It was the preferred fruit of Emperor Li Longji.
