You will have to make a rectangle shape cake, then you cut the boat frame. Then you can perhaps use the cut-away pieces or make another in the same manner and use it for the upper decks. Use cupcakes for the turrets and straws for the guns or even the sugar filled straws. It will be best to frost the pieces as they are modeled and it will help to keep the colors from running together. Use food dye mixed with whipped cream for the surrounding water. Use you imagination as gum drops can be used as well as other candies for the ships detail.

Depends how seriously you want to get into making your battleship like countvak says you make it in layers and depending on how good you can carve the layers into shape then you can frost it and buy a kit for airbrushing the food coloring to paint the ship...then as countvak says you can choose different foods/candies to imitate the different parts of the ship ooooorrrrrr you could go have one made at a bakery : )
