½ cup oil
1 ¼ cinnamon stick
2 cloves
4 star anis
2 cardamom pods
1 lb top round beef, cubed
1 cup thick coconut milk
1 slice asam gegular
2 fragrant lime leaves
1 turmeric leaf
1 ½ teaspoon sugar
Salt to taste

Spice paste
2 shallots
¾ in galangal
3 stalks lemongrass
2 cloves garlic
¾ ginger
10 dried chilies, soaked in hot water

chop the spice paste ingredients, then puree in a blender until fine. Heat the oil, add spice paste cinnamon, cloves, star anis, and cardamom and fry for 5 minutes. Add the beef, coconut milk and asam gelgulor or tamarind juice. Simmer uncovered, stirring frequently, until the meat is almost cooked. Add the lime and turmeric leaves, kerisik, sugar and salt.
