First, pick out any beans that have brown spots or broken, and pick out any twigs, leaves, etc.Next, if they are string beans (like half-runners etc.) you string them usually start at the top and pul the"string" down on each side. Next brake the bean into 3 or 4 parts. Next put the beans in the sink and rinse well. Place in a large pan and cover with water about 1" above the beans, add about 2Tbs. Of bacon grease, one med. Whole onion,1Tbs. Salt. Bring to boil and reduce heat and cook uncovered for about 2 hours, add water when needed, keep water above beans

Well that is all dependent on what temp you are cooking them at, you can cook them fast in 45 minutes or go low and it will take hour to hour & half.

Fresh green beans are very nutritious and healthy foodstuff. If properly prepared it would also be very tasty and delicious. Green beans are also known as string beans and snap beans. There are several ways of preparing or cooking fresh green beans such as boiling, steaming, microwaving and frying are popular ways of cooking beans.

Thus there is no perfect or the best way to cook green beans. But one thing common in any cooking method is that only the smallest amount of water should be used while cooking beans because water is automatically secreted from the beans itself. You can choose the way use you want to cook your beans by logging on to one of those cookery sites that has recipes to cook beans in several different ways. I like to take the beans and snap the ends off, while I'm snapping the beans I bring the water to a boil, add the beans, a ham hock, 2 tblsp of bacon grease, a little salt, a little tiger seasoning, half an onion, once I get the beans boiling, take turn em down to a good simmer and let them bad boys cook low and slow for about 2-3 hours and check water level every now and then. Make sure the ham hock is a smoked hock,,ENJOY!!!
